Culture Shocks
Culture shock from international students is very common as a new environment, culture, and practices will surround them every day. Being in a new and unfamiliar society may affect them and may cause emotional stress and home sickness. It happens because students new to Canada are cut off from familiar things, culture, and social networks that make them feel at home in their country. Culture shock is normal, and everyone will feel it; here are some tips and information that are useful to minimize culture shock :
The Canadian Culture
Learning about Canadian culture is beneficial before leaving your home country. It will help you prepare mentally and physically for every new thing that the Canadian culture has to offer. It will also help you to be prepared and adjust to the changes within living and studying in Canada.
Coping with Culture Shocks
Culture shock is indeed normal and sometimes unavoidable; changes and new experiences may be fun at first. Still, once that thrill and excitement are over, you will sometimes feel the sense of dislocation and general unease with all new and unfamiliar things. Therefore, coping strategies may be the best way to battle the impacts of culture shock and its symptoms; it will require effort and readjustments to make yourself feel at home in your new surroundings.
Remember that everyone adapts at their own pace of life in a new country
Always remember that culture shock is normal, and everyone will experience it. It is not easy to adjust and feel at home in a new environment that you are not familiar with. Therefore, always take time to adapt and never pressure yourself the need to fit in immediately. Take time and allow yourself to breathe to adjust to your new life in Canada.
